Introduction
The International Graduate Program of Materials was set up in 2006 in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU). The Department of Chemical Engineering at CYCU was established in 1955, and was one of the first four departments when the university was founded. In order to offer in-service and continuing education, the Department set up evening classes in 1965. In 1974, the Masters Degree Programs were established, and in the same year, the Doctorate Programs were set up. In 2003, the in-service master class was set up. Up to 2005, the Department had 5824 graduated students, and 452 students graduated from the master class, 18 students graduated from the doctor class. Excellent graduates are working in every sector and acting substantial roles in the domestic chemical industry. At present, the Department has 505 students in the day school, 127 students in the refresh bachelor classes, 72 graduate students in the master’s classes, 25 students in the in-service master classes and 19 students in the doctorate classes.
At present the department has 18 full-time faculties (5 professors, 7 associate professors, 2 assistant professors and 3 lecturers) and 21 adjunct teachers, whose professions cover the 4 sectors: materials, processes, environmental and biochemical technologies. The Department of Chemical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University is renowned for its atmosphere of academic study and outstanding research achievements. At present the department is featured in the research and development of precision materials, cleaning processes, pollution prevention and biotechnology. It not only gets outstanding performance in such fields but also creates leading technology. The Department has 13 laboratories and has an R&D Center for Membrane Technology and an R&D Center for Environmental Technology. Every year the department gets a research and development fund of about NT$ 40,000,000. Out of these laboratories, the R&D Center for Membrane Technology (CMT) has not only become a key feature of Chung Yuan Christian University , but also developed into an international renowned R&D center. In 2006, the CMT has been recognized as one of the five Center-of-Excellences by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan .
