The Department of Mathematics, consisting of a pure mathematics division and an applied mathematics division, was founded in 1962 with an undergraduate program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science. This program provides students with an education in core mathem- atics, methods of mathematics and an in-depth study of Computer Science. Students can choose to major either in pure mathematics or applied mathematics.
In 1985 the Graduate School of Applied Mathematics was established so that the quality of the curriculum could be upgra- ded. The graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Science covers the development of the ability to do independent research and provides advanced studies in mathematics. A Ph.D. program focusing on nonlinear analysis and theory of computation is approved by the Ministry of Education in 1995. It not only provides all background mathematics for doing research, but also leads the students to the latest trends. In this respect, this program is able to integrate the strength of the teachers and the students to form a strong research capability for making a breakthrough.
