The inquisitive mind of the College of Science
The knowledge is acquired through exhausting all possible explanations, never giving up when there’s still a thread of clue
“To explore all possibilities in search for the knowledge of the universe without giving up the slightest clue” is always in the mind of the members of the College of Science at Chung Yuan Christian University. Every faculty member and student in the college holds on to the belief that the key to the understanding of science and its applied technologies lies in the insistence on never-ending inquisition into every corner of the scientific domain and finding ways to put the knowledge into daily use. As a place of education, we have a mission to develop students’ holistic personality as down-to-earth scientists who are hard-working, humble, confident, and full of love for what they do and whoever they work with. To accomplish the mission, we encourage our faculty members to further their studies and share their research resources, and we strive to develop our college into a perfect place for nurturing all-around talents in science.

I. Introduction of the college
History of the College of Science at Chung Yuan Christian University

The College of Science is now made up of the Departments of Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Psychology and Bioscience Technology, the International Program of Nanotechnology of Graduate Courses, the Graduate Institutes of Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Psychology and Bioscience Technology, and four research centers, namely, Center for Nanotechnology, Research Center for Psychology Science, Research Center for Statistics & Consulting and Research Center for Analysis & Indentification.
The Departments of Physics and Chemistry were established at the same time as Chung Yuan was founded. The Department of Mathematics was founded later in 1962. Together, the three departments have been supporting the teaching of core courses in math, physics and chemistry, and nurturing the fundamental research in natural science. In 1966, the Department of Psychology was founded. The Graduate Institutes of Applied Physics and Applied Chemistry were established in the year of 1974. The College of Science was founded in 1980, when Chung Yuan was expanded and renamed as Chuan Yuan Christian University. In 1981, the Graduate Institute of Applied Chemistry was renamed as the Graduate Institute of Chemistry, to which the Ph.D. program was added two years later. In 1984, an MS program was added to the Department of Mathematics. In 1988, the Department of Psychology started a master’s program. Both the Graduate Institutes of Applied Physics and Mathematics were expanded to include a Ph.D. program respectively in 1992 and in 1994. In 2002, the Department of Bioscience Technology was founded. In the same year, the Department of Mathematics was renamed as the Department of Applied Mathematics. Center for Nanotechnology and Research Center for Psychology Science were founded in 2003 and 2006 respectively. In 2007, the MS program was established in the Department of Bioscience Technology, so was the Program of Nanotechnology of Graduate Courses. About the same time, MS programs for continuation education were added to both the Departments of Chemistry and Psychology. Similar undergraduate programs for continuation education were added to the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Psychology. Those programs offer great opportunities to those interested in life-long on-the-job continuation studies. Currently, the College of Science has about 2400 students, among them 360 are graduate students. We have 107 full-time faculty members and 56 part-time teachers.
