College of Science

Our university was founded in 1955, initially establishing the Departments of Physics and Chemistry. In 1962, the Mathematics Department was established (renamed as the Department of Applied Mathematics in 2002), followed by the establishment of the Psychology Department in 1966 and the Department of Biotechnology in 2002. In the realm of academic research, each department offers a Master’s program, while the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Applied Mathematics also offer doctoral programs. This initiative aims to generate new knowledge and cultivate advanced research talents, contributing to the continuous enhancement of the organizational structure within the College of Science. Our institution not only supports the teaching of foundational courses such as calculus, physics, and chemistry across the entire university but also serves as an excellent hub for fundamental scientific research.”Seeking knowledge diligently and tirelessly pursuing truth” embodies the spirit of faculty and students in the College of Science.

“The Department of Applied Mathematics of Chung Yuan Christian University is distinct from most of the traditional applied mathematics departments. In addition to the development of mathematical theory, we also focus on applying mathematical knowledge to data science, artificial intelligence, financial mathematics, bioinformatics and medical statistics. In order to strengthen students′ practical ability, which is one of the main goals of our department, we start with the following points:
We encourage teachers and students to actively participate in the practical competitions. In the past, the teachers and students from our department participated in various competitions through practice, and have won many awards. These awards included five gold medals in the international “”TAAI Computer Game Competition””, one gold medal in “”Artificial Intelligence Application””, a silver medal in “”Computer Olympiad”” and first place in the “”Golden Elephant Cup Big Data”” competition. To develop intelligent computing, an “”Intelligent Computing and Big Data”” research laboratory has been set up recently. We spent millions to add some high-speed computing equipment to this laboratory for all teachers and students in the department to carry out subjects in intelligent computing. We subdivide the department into three programs: Mathematics and Scientific Computing Program, Statistics and Big Data Program, and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Program. This is to integrate inter-disciplinary learning and make innovative implementation more effective. In the future, the department will be mainly devoted to the study of big data analysis, artificial intelligence, biostatistics, cross-field integrated quantum computing, and other intelligent computing related fields.”
The Chung Yuan Christian University Physics Department was established in 1955 and is one of the first four departments, with a history of more than sixty years. In 1974, to expand research and cultivate high-tech talents, the M.A Program of Applied Physics was established. The teachers were composed of those from the departments of Physics and various departments within the College of Engineering.
As research fields are becoming more and more subdivided, the relevant departments of the College of Technology have established graduate institutes. The M.A Program of Applied Physics has been under the responsibility of the Faculty of the Department of Physics since the 1984 academic year, focusing on the study of condensed matter, applied optics, and theoretical physics. To promote a long-term research program, build up research depth, and boost research level, the Ph.D. Program of the Institute of Applied Physics was established in the 1992 academic year.
In response to global trends and technological tendencies, and to closely connect teaching and research, the Department primarily focuses on theoretical physics, materials science and optoelectronics in terms of teacher expertise, curriculum planning, and research development. The Department (University) established the Physical Group and the Optoelectronics & Materials Science Group in the 2006 academic year and began enrolling students. At the same time, to cope with the policy of the Ministry of Education, in the 2007 academic year, the Institute of Applied Physics and the Department of Physics merged into the Department of Physics. The Department is cooperating with the school to engage in internationalization. The current ongoing programs include plans for exchange students at Niigata University, Zhongshan University in Guangzhou, and other universities in mainland China. Since the 2014 academic year, about 60 junior students in the Department of Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering at Jimei University in Xiamen will study in the Department for one year (this exchange program is expected to run for 10 years), which will greatly enhance the academic vision for these students. The department is committed to cultivating cutting-edge talents with profound knowledge of physics and advanced R&D technology. The total number of undergraduates is about 3,900, the master students is about 610, and the doctoral students is about 20. In the 2013 academic year, the total number of undergraduates was 414, the total number of master students was 28, and the total number of doctoral students was 10 (up to 2014.5.31).
Department of Chemistry of Chung Yuan Christian University was established in 1955 and, after more than 60 years of continuous efforts towards innovation, now boasts first-class faculty and facilities. In 1974, we jointly established the Institute of Applied Chemistry with the Department of Chemical Engineering. By 1981, the institute was divided into the Institute of Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Chemistry. In 1983, we received approval from the Ministry of Education to establish a PhD program, thereby enhancing the integration of academic research and practical application within our department. In response to changes in the domestic socio-economic landscape and to meet the national demand for skilled manpower as per the Ministry of Education and our university’s development plan, we reassessed and adjusted our existing departments and student enrollment in 1999. The Chemistry Department was divided into two divisions: Chemistry and Material Chemistry, each admitting one class, and also established a master’s program for working professionals. Under strict evaluations that balance theory with practice, the quality of our students has continuously improved. Our graduates have gone on to excel in further studies abroad or in the industrial sector, contributing to the excellent reputation of our department.

In 1966, Chung Yuan Christian University founded Department of Psychology, the second department of psychology in Taiwan, with Professor Chia-Yu Liu as the chairman. With the help of all chairpersons, teachers, alumni, students, and colleagues in the school, the department has grown into an important center of psychological studies.

In 1987, the department expanded its programs to have an enrollment of two classes per year. One year later, the graduate programs were launched.

In 1996, the department started the credit-based program of extended education. In the same year, the Ministry of Education entrusted the department to set up the undergraduate credit-based program for middle school student counseling.

In 2004, the department`s graduate programs were expanded to include a new in-service graduate program to follow the philosophy of holistic education and train all-round talents in psychology who are equipped with professional knowledge, humanistic qualities, such as diligence, sociability, and other essential virtues and who are skilled in both practice and research. Over the years, our programs have trained many psychological professionals working as outstanding practitioners or independent researchers.

Human understanding of biology used to be limited to appearances until the 1950s when DNA was discovered, marking a significant leap in our comprehension of biological essence. Gradually, people began to understand why each species and individual possess distinct traits through the arrangement of DNA on genes. Genetic variations could lead to abnormalities or diseases, but they also allowed for further advancements, such as utilizing gene transference to produce specific substances or replicate organisms.
In just fifty short years, due to the rapid development of biotechnology, many past “sci-fi” concepts have gradually become realities. People are filled with confidence and anticipation for the future developments, hence the phrase “Yesterday’s dream, today’s treasure, tomorrow’s star” aptly describes “biotechnology”. The 21st century is thus proclaimed as the era of “biotechnology”.
