The Department of Landscape Architecture at CYCU is working on integrating sustainability with the campus environment and ecological systems.

The Taoyuan City Government’s Water Resources Bureau plans to transform the Da Niulan Support Channel into a regional drainage system to address urban expansion and climate change. The project not only enlarges the water conveyance section but also emphasizes the integration of ecological water environment concepts with sustainable campus planning to avoid future drainage systems impacting campus spaces. The city government encourages young students to participate by proposing future space usage imaginings through student design competitions, with the potential for inclusion in actual engineering designs, promoting community consensus and innovative participation.

In the summer of 2023, Professor Zhang Dexin from the Department of Civil Engineering and Professor Peng Wenhui from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University collaborated on a project. They incorporated a student design competition into the curriculum of the third-year Environmental Planning and Design course in the Landscape Architecture Department. This initiative allowed students to confront real climate and environmental challenges and engage in the revitalization of campus water environments.

After eight weeks of in-depth exploration, students observed the relationships between various environments on campus. They worked in groups to plan distinctive spaces that integrate diverse considerations of water resource reuse and new spatial attributes. Through this process, Chung Yuan Christian University’s faculty and students experienced the ecological changes in the water environment, enriching campus life.
