Due to the impact of global warming, Taiwan’s temperatures this year have risen more than 1 degree Celsius above the historical climate average. Faced with the pressing issue of climate change, it is imperative to take sustainable actions. Chung Yuan Christian University, guided by the belief in excellence in sustainability, has undertaken a comprehensive inventory and assessment of trees on campus with a diameter greater than 5 centimeters. This includes recording tree species, height, and health condition, assigning unique digital identifiers, and utilizing the i-Tree Eco software developed by the U.S. Forest Service to calculate the benefits of campus trees. It is the first university in Taiwan to complete a full investigation of campus tree carbon sequestration, air pollution removal, and health benefits.
On the morning of the 13th, a meaningful ‘Campus Tree Plaque Unveiling Ceremony’ was held in the lush and beautiful ‘Holistic Humanism Avenue.’ This event served as a pledge, expressing a firm commitment to environmental protection and the practice of sustainable development.
Chung Yuan Christian University’s Vice President, Hong Ying-Yi, expressed during the plaque unveiling ceremony that, as an institution that deeply believes in the power of education to drive societal progress, Chung Yuan places great importance on the practice of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) alongside its pursuit of academic excellence. The university integrates sustainability principles into all aspects of teaching, research, and campus governance. Through methods such as energy conservation, carbon reduction, and resource recycling, Chung Yuan actively responds to global sustainability efforts.
Furthermore, they have established the Academy for Sustainable Development and the International Cloud Academy platform, which respectively promote SDGs general education courses and create an innovative educational ecosystem that combines the virtual and physical worlds. Hong Ying-Yi emphasized that nurturing professionals to engage in green environmental protection and related industries is a significant contribution to society. This is a responsibility to the environment and future generations and a commitment to the harmonious development of society.
