CYCU Establishes “School of Semiconductor Industry”.

In the 113th academic year, Chung Yuan Christian University officially established the “School of Semiconductor Industry.” It is the first private university to be approved to establish a semiconductor school, following the national universities such as National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. To support the cultivation of semiconductor talent at Chung Yuan Christian University, alumnus Hsieh Yen-Sheng generously donated NT$15 million to assist in the development of the School of Semiconductor Industry and the establishment of a Semiconductor Material Testing Center. This contribution aims to bolster Chung Yuan’s efforts in creating a base for semiconductor talent cultivation.

The donation and signing ceremony for the “School of Semiconductor Industry Development Fund” was held on the morning of August 1. President Lee Ying-Ming of Chung Yuan Christian University stated in his speech that Chung Yuan has already launched industry-academia collaborations with several semiconductor companies, co-established laboratories, and offered interdisciplinary semiconductor programs, including new international specialized courses, all aimed at actively cultivating semiconductor talent. On July 11, the university received official approval from the Ministry of Education to establish the “School of Semiconductor Industry.” The school includes a Master’s Program in Semiconductor Materials and Optoelectronic Inspection and plans to establish undergraduate and graduate programs, aiming to become a global “Semiconductor Talent Bank.”

Lee Ying-Ming expressed gratitude for the continuous support and care from the outstanding alumnus Hsieh Yen-Sheng, who has been generously contributing resources to his alma mater for 30 years. Besides establishing the “Hsieh Yen-Sheng Scholarship for Needy Students” and the “Hsieh Yen-Sheng Leadership and Service Scholarship,” he also supported the Digital Development Fund at Chung Yuan Christian University, helping the university progress towards the goal of becoming a “Global Digital Learning Hub.” Lee emphasized that the semiconductor industry is critical to the global economy and industrial development, and as a university focused on science and engineering, Chung Yuan Christian University must play a key and leading role in this field.

Wu Zongyuan, Dean of the School of Semiconductor Industry at Chung Yuan Christian University, pointed out that the university has a strong foundation in engineering and science education, which has quietly established a robust network of alumni in the semiconductor industry. Many distinguished alumni hold key positions in semiconductor-related industries. The support from industry alumni, including technical assistance, instrument donations, and participation in course planning, has laid a solid foundation for talent cultivation in semiconductors at Chung Yuan Christian University. In addition to the existing talent cultivation plans and courses, another important aspect of the semiconductor academic development is research. The university will actively invest in semiconductor materials, equipment, and testing analysis. The establishment of the Semiconductor Material Testing Center by the end of the year, with significant support from alumnus Hsieh Yen-Sheng, will be a major contribution.

Hsieh Yen-Sheng graduated from the Department of Industrial Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University and was honored as an “Outstanding Alumnus” in 2004. In 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering from the university. Currently serving as the Chairman of Puyue Investment, Hsieh is also a board member of several publicly listed companies and a former district governor of Rotary International. He has been actively involved in international programs for underprivileged care, embodying the philosophy of “holistic education,” and is highly regarded across various sectors.

Hsieh Yen-Sheng stated that since graduating from Chung Yuan Christian University, he has developed his career in the printed circuit board industry, focusing on industrial engineering and electronics. Observing the development trends in Taiwan’s industry, he has come to realize the importance of the semiconductor industry. He is pleased to see his alma mater establish the School of Semiconductor Industry, recognizing that now is the right time. Looking ahead, with the establishment of the Semiconductor Material Testing Center, there is potential to plan for related research centers in semiconductor packaging and chip materials. He expressed his full support for these initiatives and hopes to contribute to the sustainable development of semiconductor talent cultivation and the co-construction of research centers at Chung Yuan Christian University.
