Professor Kang-Ping Lin of CYCU has been awarded an honorary doctorate internationally.

On September 30, 2024, Professor Kang-Ping Lin, a Distinguished Lifetime Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, for his outstanding achievements in medical engineering. Professor Lin’s research has advanced global healthcare, fostered international biomedical collaboration, and strengthened Chung Yuan’s global reputation.

The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Gabriel Oltean, Vice President of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, with the participation of Senate Vice Chair Prof. Liviu-Cristian Miclea. The university acknowledged Professor Lin’s long-standing collaboration with their Department of Electrical Engineering and Measurements and his active role in organizing the “Advances in Medical and Health Technology” (MediTech) conference since 2016. During the event, held concurrently with the 2024 MediTech, Professor Lin delivered a keynote on “How ICT Supports Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality,” highlighting the integration of ICT with medical technology, which was met with great acclaim.

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca highlighted Professor Kang-Ping Lin as one of the world’s leading experts in medical engineering, with research spanning wearable medical devices, physiological signal processing, and medical imaging. In recent years, he has focused on integrating industry, academia, and home healthcare, developing compact, affordable medical devices, many of which have reached mass production. Holding 19 patents, he has led 15 major research projects, published over 76 international papers, and received the prestigious Antonio Hernandez International Clinical Engineering Award from the American College of Clinical Engineering, solidifying his international influence.

Additionally, Professor Lin has long promoted international academic cooperation and medical device development. He currently serves as Vice President of the United Nations-affiliated International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and is set to become the first Taiwanese professor to lead the organization as President from 2025 to 2028. At Chung Yuan Christian University, he directs the Medical Device Technology Translation Center and has previously led the Biomedical Engineering Center at Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, contributing his expertise both within and beyond academia.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Kang-Ping Lin expressed that, over the past 40 years, he has dedicated himself to translating research into practical applications, focusing on developing medical devices that improve patient care and quality of life. Receiving this honor, he said, not only acknowledges his personal journey but also recognizes everyone who has supported him along the way. Lin emphasized his belief that “the core of science should serve humanity.” Through his role with IFMBE, he has the opportunity to collaborate with experts worldwide to advance biomedical engineering and address some of today’s most pressing health challenges.

Notably, Professor Lin is an alumnus of Chung Yuan Christian University, holding a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and a master’s in applied physics. He completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Physics at UCLA in 1994, after which he returned to Chung Yuan to teach. In his speech, he shared heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I am deeply thankful to Chung Yuan for providing a stable and inspiring environment that allowed me to focus on research and academics, to innovate freely, and to contribute to society.”

Professor Lin mentioned that his parents were both educators, instilling in him a strong sense of mission toward teaching. Receiving this honor in Romania, he said, was profoundly meaningful, and he intends to display the honorary doctorate alongside his Outstanding Teacher Award from Chung Yuan University on his desk, a reminder of the importance of teaching, research, and community service.

Looking ahead, Professor Lin will continue to promote innovative technologies for home healthcare, especially in cardiac health. He aims to develop a remote health monitoring platform integrating wireless communication and ECG measurement. Through international industry-academia partnerships, he hopes to expand Taiwan’s influence in the global medical device market and establish Chung Yuan Christian University as a distinguished international brand.
