CYCU Establishes “Integrated Circuit Co-Design Laboratory” in Collaboration with Industry to Nurture IC Design Talent.

On December 19, 2024, the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Chung Yuan Christian University held the inauguration ceremony for the “Integrated Circuit Co-Design Laboratory,” marking a new milestone in the university’s efforts to cultivate IC design professionals and deepen industry-academia collaboration. This laboratory not only highlights Chung Yuan’s strengths in the fields of semiconductors and IC design but also integrates corporate resources and alumni support to create a platform that combines education, research, and practical application, contributing actively to the cultivation of innovative technology talent.

During the ceremony, Chung Yuan Christian University Chairman Chang Kuang-Cheng stated that, thanks to the generous donations and support of alumni, over one million NTD has been raised to establish a dedicated fund for the “Integrated Circuit Co-Design Laboratory.” He expressed confidence that through the collaborative mechanisms jointly planned with industry and alumni, the research and teaching capabilities of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in semiconductors and IC design will be further strengthened, thereby nurturing more outstanding professionals for the industry.

Dean Chiu Chien-Sung of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science expressed his gratitude to the alumni for their generous contributions, particularly the distinguished alumni from the technology sector who hold key positions in leading companies such as Sonix Technology, Sinopower, Novatek Microelectronics, Etron Technology, and Anpec Electronics, among others. He noted that these alumni unanimously recognize IC design as a core technology for the future of industrial development and strongly support their alma mater’s pursuit of excellence in this field.

Dean Chiu emphasized that the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Chung Yuan Christian University will continue to leverage its strengths in IC design and semiconductor technology, fostering close collaboration with the industry to create new possibilities and opportunities.

Professor Zhong Wen-Yao from the Department of Electronic Engineering further highlighted that the establishment of the laboratory integrates the university’s existing resources with an exceptional team of professors to create a long-term, open platform combining teaching and practical application. He emphasized that the lab’s inauguration will not only enhance the quality of teaching and research but also equip students with practical skills to meet the industry’s demand for high-caliber IC design professionals.

The “Integrated Circuit Co-Design Laboratory,” planned by Professor Lai Yu-Kun of the Department of Electrical Engineering, is built through partnerships with leading IC design companies’ university collaboration programs, including AMD Xilinx, Siemens EDA, and Intel Altera. Additionally, it leverages resources from the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) under the National Applied Research Laboratories. The lab is equipped with 70 Linux and Windows dual-system computer workstations, interconnected via high-speed Ethernet, and supported by server hosts and disk arrays. It features industry-standard IC and FPGA design tools and is integrated with the NVIDIA high-performance computing cluster at Chung Yuan’s Chang Jing-Yu Memorial Library through the university’s high-speed optical fiber backbone network. This setup enables IC design to incorporate the latest developments in artificial intelligence and big data, empowering faculty and students to engage in advanced cross-disciplinary research and related teaching.

Chung Yuan Christian University stated that the inauguration of the Integrated Circuit Co-Design Laboratory at the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science signifies the university’s commitment to deepening collaboration with leading enterprises. It also demonstrates Chung Yuan’s determination to address industry needs in IC design and to drive technological innovation. The university looks forward to this milestone enhancing its reputation as a leader in cultivating top-tier talent in IC design, ensuring that Chung Yuan continues to shine brightly in this field.
