CYCU’s Department of Commercial Design Wins “Best of the Year” at the 2025 Young Designers’ Exhibition.

The 2025 Young Designers’ Exhibition, Taiwan’s largest annual design event, was held from May 9 to 12 at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 2. The event brought together 122 departments from local universities and leading design schools from the USA, Thailand, Japan, Mexico, India, and Australia, sparking a vibrant exchange of creativity and ideas.

Chung Yuan Christian University’s Department of Commercial Design captivated audiences with its main visual project, “Green Screen: Prologue”, earning the prestigious Golden Pin Concept Design Award: Best of the Year in Communication Design. Only nine teams nationwide received this top honor, showcasing Chung Yuan’s excellence in design integration and cross-disciplinary innovation.

Since its establishment, Chung Yuan’s Commercial Design Department has actively encouraged students to participate in professional exhibitions, using platforms like the Young Designers’ Exhibition to present teaching achievements and engage with top talents from other institutions. Except for brief interruptions during the SARS and COVID-19 outbreaks, the department has consistently participated in this prominent event.

This year, Chung Yuan’s students once again stood out with their solid creative skills and sharp design insights. Under the guidance of Professor Ji Jian-Long, with strong support from mentors Huang Wen-Zong and Shao Yun-Ru, the team’s project theme — “Green Screen: Prologue” — reflected the learning journey of design as a self-refining post-production process. The exhibit, inspired by green screen studios and enhanced with interactive technologies, created an immersive experience that drew long lines of visitors and became one of the exhibition’s most talked-about highlights.

Their outstanding performance earned them the coveted Best of the Year award, adding another remarkable achievement to Chung Yuan’s design legacy.

“We are grateful to Chung Yuan’s Commercial Design Department for providing a space to freely explore and create. Here, we enjoy learning and playing with design. Thank you to the Golden Pin Concept Design Award for this honor!”

The students likened their four-year journey to video post-production — each revision and layer reflecting personal growth. The green screen symbolizes both the starting point of dreams and a mirror for self-reflection, reminding designers to continuously rethink, rebuild, and move forward.

Another finalist in the Communication Design category, “The Pride of Taiwan Herbal Tea,” was guided by Professor Shao Yun-Ru. Inspired by the traditional brand “Zheng Fa Herbal Tea,” the team explored Taiwan’s herbal culture through the classic steps of identifying, smelling, diagnosing, and selecting. Custom fonts and prescription-style tea packs showcased the unique flavors and healing charm of Taiwanese herbal tea, highlighting its cultural richness and importance of preservation.

Beyond the Communication Design category, Chung Yuan students also excelled in Product Design. Lu Hui-Yu’s project, “DRAFT Road Marking Robot,” was shortlisted for the Golden Pin Concept Design Special Sponsor Award: Product Design. Addressing smart mobility and urban sustainability, the work embodies the spirit of “design for good,” focusing on socially valuable proposals like autonomous road marking robots, smart city stray cat management, and rescue dog transport systems, reflecting deep concern for public welfare and life-related issues.

In the Product Design category, Chung Yuan also collaborated with China Motor Corporation (CMC) through an industry-academia partnership. Under the guidance of Professor Shih Chang-Fu and CMC’s Design Department, students developed innovative future mobility concepts. By combining practical experience with forward-looking perspectives, the project aimed to transform design creativity into solutions for social issues and drivers of future innovation.
