CYCU Receives NVIDIA Academic Grant to Empower Quantum AI for Enhanced Typhoon Forecasting and Green Energy Leadership

Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) recently announced that the research project, “Hybrid Quantum Network for Typhoon Forecasting in Wind Power Farms,” led by Chair Professor Ying Yi Hong of the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been selected for the NVIDIA Academic Grant Program. This grant serves as a testament to the strength of CYCU’s Quantum Computing Research Team and will generate strong synergy with the goals of the existing “CYCU AI University” collaboration between CYCU and NVIDIA.

CYCU AI University aims to comprehensively elevate the university’s prowess in AI teaching and research. Its core objectives include: 1. Integrating Deep Learning Institute (DLI) teacher certification and teaching materials to ensure AI instructional quality aligns with international standards; 2. Developing applications in Quantum Computing and Large Language Models (LLMs) to explore frontier technologies; and 3. Assisting startup companies within the incubator center to accelerate technology commercialization and industrial innovation.

While the NVIDIA Academic Grant is independent of the partnership platform, its research focus—utilizing a Hybrid Quantum Network for forecasting—is a powerful practical implementation of the AI University’s second key objective: Quantum Computing applications.

Chair Professor Ying Yi Hong stated: “We are deeply grateful for NVIDIA’s recognition and support for this research’s potential. The acquisition of NVIDIA hardware allows us to explore the computational limits of hybrid quantum and deep learning network models in a practical setting. This achievement will complement our talent cultivation and research foundation established under the AI University framework, collectively and significantly enhancing CYCU’s technological leadership in typhoon forecasting and green energy.”

Under this Academic Grant Program, NVIDIA is donating four (4) NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q Workstation Edition GPUs. These high-end GPUs, based on NVIDIA Blackwell architecture, will provide the Smart Power Lab with unparalleled acceleration capabilities for complex model training and simulations.

Professor Yu-Kun Lai, Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at CYCU, commented: “The award won by Chair Professor Ying Yi Hong’s team fully demonstrates CYCU’s outstanding research capability in the AI domain, which is precisely the success the CYCU AI University strives to foster. This donation of top-tier GPUs will be a critical reinforcement of CYCU’s AI computing foundation, continuously propelling our academic research and talent development to world-class standards.”

The research team will subsequently integrate NVIDIA technologies, including the NVIDIA CUDA-Q platform for hybrid quantum-classical computing, and NVIDIA RAPIDS, to continue producing high-level academic results, advance energy and climate science, and contribute to sustainable green energy development.
