The Department of Interior Design at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) participated in the 2026 Taiwan International AI Design Expo from July 9 to 12, presenting the exhibition “New Interior Horizons: AI-Human Co-Creation in Interior Design” at the AI Lifestyle Trends Exhibition in Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1. Featuring six research and design projects, the exhibition demonstrated how generative AI, human-AI collaboration, parametric design, 3D printing, and digital fabrication are reshaping interior design practice while opening new possibilities for smart living and sustainable spatial innovation.

The AI Lifestyle Trends Exhibition brought together exhibitors from Japan, Italy, Singapore, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming everyday life. Showcasing innovations in living environments, design practice, and sustainable development, the exhibition highlighted emerging trends in AI-driven design. Through its featured research projects, CYCU’s Department of Interior Design demonstrated its distinctive approach to integrating AI into design education while engaging with international designers and researchers to explore the evolving role of AI in shaping the future of design.

The featured projects explored a diverse range of themes, including residential design, commercial spaces, human–AI co-creation, and smart living. By integrating generative AI, GPT, Midjourney, parametric design, and digital fabrication, the works demonstrated collaborative workflows between designers and AI—from initial concept development and spatial planning to physical production. Among them, “The Application of AI in Single-Family Residential Interior Design: A Case Study Using Midjourney” employed generative AI to rapidly produce design proposals aligned with spatial layouts, enhancing both the efficiency of design ideation and communication.

Another project, “Applying AI Uncertainty to the Interior Design Proposal Workflow for Themed Restaurants,” integrated GPT and Midjourney into a comprehensive design process, demonstrating AI’s potential to support design decision-making and creative development. Meanwhile, “Oki-Farm Smart Kitchen Farm” combined parametric design, 3D printing, and smart cultivation technologies to create a future-oriented living environment that integrates food production, community interaction, and circular sustainability, addressing emerging priorities in smart living and sustainable design.
Hsieh Chun-Yu, Chair of CYCU’s Department of Interior Design, noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the design profession. In recent years, the department has embraced AI as a catalyst for creative development, human–AI collaboration, and design innovation, while advancing two key research and teaching priorities: creative aesthetic environments and sustainable spaces for an aging society. Beyond exploring the application of generative AI in spatial planning, design thinking, and concept generation, the department also integrates AI with parametric design, 3D printing, and digital fabrication to cultivate students’ interdisciplinary expertise, design judgment, and capacity for innovation.
Hsieh added that participating in the exhibition not only highlighted the department’s achievements in AI-driven design education and interdisciplinary research, but also provided an international platform for faculty and students to connect their research with industry while fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration. Looking ahead, the department will continue to strengthen the integration of AI, digital fabrication, and sustainable design, preparing a new generation of designers equipped with technological expertise, creative thinking, and a strong sense of social responsibility to shape a smarter, more human-centered, and sustainable future for interior design.
