CYCU Students and Faculty Win Gold in Creative Product Design for the Third Consecutive Year, Focusing on Developing Communication Tools for the Deaf and Mute.

To cultivate professional talents in microcontroller applications, the “Holtek MCU Creative Competition,” organized by Holtek Semiconductor Inc., has entered its 18th year. This year’s competition attracted 100 teams from universities and colleges nationwide. A cross-disciplinary team from Chung Yuan University, composed of members from the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Business Design, stood out, winning 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 honorable mention, and 3 professional awards, making them the biggest winners this year. Notably, the team has clinched the gold medal in the “Creative Product Design” category for three consecutive years, setting a new record in the competition’s history.

Chung Yuan University emphasizes that faculty and students, combining professional knowledge with societal needs, contribute to a better life and environment. Professors Liao Yuping from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Shih Chang-Fu from the Department of Business Design jointly guided students in creating the work “Easy Chat+,” winning the gold medal in the “Creative Product Design” category. This project utilizes wearable devices paired with AI computation to recognize the words users write, instantly displaying them on the attached screen and emitting sound, providing a convenient communication tool for individuals with hearing or speech impairments.

Yang Wei-Ting, a fourth-year electrical engineering student, mentioned that the most challenging part of the process was gesture recognition and the application of deep learning. It required collecting a large amount of image data, controlling the overall system operation through the prototype product, and continually establishing, training, and testing models. After a year of research, programming, and production, they overcame the limitations of embedded system hardware, achieving a lightweight and convenient design.
