With the core value of native sustainable environment, CYCU cultivates the Indigenous Design Bachelor’s Program, delving deep into tribal culture to foster students’ care for and protection of the local environment. Through collaborative courses in professional design, students participate in landscape design competitions and engage in on-site projects to enhance motivation for learning and lay the foundation for future careers. This approach encourages students to actively develop design capabilities while reconnecting with environmental concerns based on tribal values.
The program combines fundamental design with courses in tribal construction and ecological tourism. Preparations for competitions start in the summer and include design ideation for waste reduction and carbon footprint, concept deconstruction and reconstruction, visual presentation of imagery, plant selection, cost estimation for implementation, hands-on workshops for bamboo construction techniques, plastic molding, material preparation, site reconnaissance, and analysis. The preparation not only tests problem-solving skills before implementation but also fosters students’ active communication, empathy, attention to detail, and collaboration, which are emphasized in the collaborative courses.
