Creating a paradigm for the innovative industry of blood purification, Professor Zhang Yong-rong from CYCU is honored with the ‘Tungyuan Award’ in recognition of his contributions.

Chung Yuan Christian University’s Professor Zhang Yong has been named the recipient of the “Tungyuan Award” in the “Chemical Engineering/Materials Science” category, as announced by the Tungyuan Technology and Education Foundation’s 30th edition of the awards. Professor Zhang Yong, a distinguished professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University, is the only awardee from a private university this year.

Zhang Yong has dedicated his efforts to the research and development of membrane technology. His groundbreaking work involves the development of biomimetic double-ionic charge-modified multilayer membrane structures, leading to the creation of the world’s most efficient anticoagulant-type leukocyte filter. This innovation contributes to reducing side effects in blood transfusions, aiding in sepsis diagnosis, and improving arthritis treatment. Zhang Yong is recognized as a pioneer in applying membrane science to the field of biomedicine, with outstanding contributions.

The awards ceremony for the “Tungyuan Award” is scheduled to take place in mid-November, acknowledging individuals who have made concrete and outstanding contributions to Taiwanese society. The award, symbolized by a “Lifetime Achievement Award,” recognizes those with remarkable achievements. At the age of 47, Zhang Yong graduated at the top of his class from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University. He later returned to his alma mater to teach and became the youngest specially appointed professor in the university’s history at the age of 36. His extensive research in expanding biomimetic double-ionic membrane systems for the separation and purification of blood cells, blood pathogens, and growth factors has led to the development of advanced membrane separation products, including FDA-certified “anticoagulant-type leukocyte filter technology.” This innovative membrane material sets a paradigm for Taiwan’s advanced blood purification industry.
