To embrace the concept of “limited resources, unlimited creativity” in circular design, Chung Yuan Christian University and EVA Air collaborated to organize the “1st EVA Air ESG Environmental Innovation Design Competition.” This competition aimed to encourage students to showcase their creative ideas by repurposing decommissioned airline cargo containers. Through this event, both organizations sought to fulfill their social responsibilities and raise awareness among students and the public about the importance of green environmental practices. The award ceremony was held on June 9th at Chung Yuan Christian University’s Tsung-Zhao Chang Memorial Hall, where awards were presented by the Chairman of Chung Yuan Christian University, Zhang Guangzheng, and the General Manager of EVA Air, Sun Chia-ming.
The campus of Chung Yuan Christian University served as the experimental venue for the design competition. With the goal of waste reduction in mind, students from the four departments of the College of Design at Chung Yuan Christian University generated innovative designs using decommissioned and ineffective equipment from the aviation industry, creating new highlights within the campus environment. A total of 333 students and 30 instructors from seven courses in the College of Design participated in the competition. Students were required to independently select a public space within Chung Yuan Christian University’s campus as their design base. The competition was divided into two categories: “Spatial Design Group” and “Commercial Product Design Group.”
The winner of the “Design Award,” the highest honor in the “Spatial Design Group,” was Zou Cai-ting, a student from the Interior Design Department. Her work, titled “HIDDEN HILL,” was situated on the lawn surrounded by various department buildings. Zou Cai-ting shared the concept behind her design, stating that it should be student and teacher-oriented. Therefore, she used stacked cargo containers to create a sense of privacy, providing students with small corners within the campus where they can relax and rejuvenate their minds and bodies.
The “Gold Award” in the “Commercial Product Design Group” was awarded to Lin Hong-li and Qiu Xu-zhao, two students from the Industrial Design Department, for their work titled “EVAChair.” Lin Hong-li expressed that their teachers often reminded them in class about the responsibility of design to meet the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), including the reuse of discarded materials. The opportunity to collaborate with the renowned company EVA Air was considered a great honor by all the students involved.
