In order to cultivate students’ awareness of professional ethics issues and enhance their ability to solve ethical dilemmas, the highly anticipated 8th National Professional Ethics Case Competition in 2023 attracted participation from over 140 teams representing 19 colleges and universities nationwide. After a two-month competition process, 22 teams were selected for the preliminary round awards, and the final 12 elite teams gathered recently at the Showdell Hall of Zhang Jingyu Memorial Library at Chung Yuan Christian University for the decisive round. The Department of Finance and Law at Chung Yuan Christian University was honored with the prestigious “Outstanding Award” as they presented their case on “The Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ethics Issues within the Judicial System.”
With the rise of emerging technologies, the application and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in various fields have become a popular topic of discussion. Under the guidance of Professor Chiu Guanqiao from the Department of Finance and Law at Chung Yuan Christian University, a group of fourth-year students focused on the use of AI technology in the judicial system. They emphasized the need to propose and evaluate four fundamental legislative measures, including balancing efficiency and humanity, professional specialization and procedural simplification, safeguarding privacy and human dignity, and establishing legal education. The goal was to ensure that the integration and utilization of AI complement and progress alongside individuals, creating a convenient and excellent judicial environment.
Student Chen Dieyi expressed that from setting the theme, selecting the case, to delving into the associated issues, the process not only demonstrated professionalism but also provided an understanding of the diversity of professional ethics. It highlighted the importance of enhancing one’s soft skills to adapt to future career development and social participation. During the final presentation, the team exhibited a steady and confident demeanor, generating enthusiastic responses and resonating with the audience. Their performance received praise from multiple judges.
This year’s participation in the “Professional Ethics Case Competition” encompassed a wide range of topics, including exploring environmental ethics concerning energy and coral reef ecosystems, service ethics in the upbringing of children from new immigrant families, engineering ethics controversies surrounding YouTubers creating deceptive videos, cybersecurity issues in the era of big data, legal ethics of AI application in judicial trials, and design ethics related to the impact of the Tamsui Light Rail on transportation, cultural landscapes in old streets, and other issues. Each team fully grasped current events and integrated specific real-life examples that align with social concerns, demonstrating their care for societal issues.
