CYCU cooperated with the Love Binti International Care Association to embark on a two-week overseas service-learning program in Uganda this February. The program aimed to assist local women in addressing the issue of “menstrual poverty” and to narrow the knowledge gap by providing information empowerment to the organization. The university launched the “You subscribe, I act” Uganda support campaign, inviting the public to subscribe to cloth sanitary pads and to join the group in sewing the pads together on April 24, turning the goodwill of subscription into tangible action.
The African Uganda Overseas Volunteer Team from CYCU consisted of 5 students who provided digital services for local organizations and assisted the Love for Girls International Care Association in organizing a “Cloth Menstrual Pad Promotion Workshop” in the slums of Uganda. They taught sewing skills for cloth menstrual pads and promoted the concept of reusable pads, as well as held a group exercise activity for 100 students at a local primary school.
After returning to Taiwan, the team of students held a presentation to showcase their achievements. They used role-play scenarios to demonstrate the process of cross-cultural collaboration and their insights gained through the service-learning program. They also invited attendees to personally sew cloth menstrual pads, sending their good wishes and blessings to every woman in Uganda.
CYCU has been promoting long-term overseas service learning programs for 15 years. The service footprint covers various countries around the world, including Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and El Salvador, to fulfill the responsibility of being a global citizen.
