CYCU conducted a survey on “The Assistance and Impact of ChatGPT and AI on Teaching and Learning for Teachers and Students.” According to the survey results, students believed that ChatGPT could assist them in completing tasks such as summarizing key points (31%), translating articles (28%), and writing assignments/reports (24%). Based on the students’ responses, having access to ChatGPT provided them with templates to reference and enriched their data collection process. However, some students were concerned that they may become overly reliant on ChatGPT and therefore lazy in their learning, or lose their ability to think independently.
As for teachers, 35% were open to the idea of students using ChatGPT to assist in completing coursework, 53% said it depended on the nature or content of the assignment, and 10% could not accept it. Regarding how to overcome or reduce the negative impact of ChatGPT, 36% believed it was possible to understand the regulations of other countries or universities, 29% believed there should be tools for checking if students used ChatGPT or AI to take exams or submit assignments, 14% believed student assignments and test papers should be strictly reviewed, and 13% were not concerned at all. Additionally, over 90% of teachers were willing to participate in ChatGPT lectures and workshops organized by the school.
According to the survey results, Chung Yuan Christian University has formulated the following guidelines for admission, teaching, and learning in response to the impact of ChatGPT and AI:
- In the admission process, each department should master the key points of written review, carefully evaluate students’ learning motivation, interests, abilities, and characteristics. And in the interview stage, confirm the information provided by students through oral tests, written tests, and practical tests.
- In terms of teaching, encourage students to make good use of tools such as ChatGPT or AI and strengthen the way of assessing learning effectiveness.
- In terms of student learning, teach students to use these tools correctly, encourage them to have more critical thinking processes, and comply with ethical standards.
In the future, the university will continue to explore the application of ChatGPT and AI in teaching and learning through teacher workshops and learning centers.
