The Department of Accounting at CYCU represented Taiwan and won the Excellence Award at the Deloitte Tax Championship.

The Department of Accounting at Chung Yuan Christian University, after representing Taiwan in the 2022 Greater China Deloitte Tax Championship, stood out again in 2023 among the highly competitive teams from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. They successfully advanced to the semifinals, becoming the only team from Taiwan to compete against more than 100 students from over 60 schools from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The competition concluded successfully in Chongqing in November 2023, with the students from Chung Yuan Christian University’s Department of Accounting receiving the Excellence Award.

The Deloitte Tax Championship, organized by Deloitte China (known as Deloitte & Touche in Taiwan), one of the world’s Big Four accounting firms, is an international and professional tax competition for students from higher education institutions in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. This year’s competition saw participation from 57 universities across 29 cities in Greater China. The four students from Chung Yuan Christian University, Lin Ching-Hsia, Lan Wei-Chun, Lin Yu-Hsuan, and Lin Tzu-Chun, represented Taiwan. Under the dedicated guidance of their professor, Tsao Mei-Chuan, and after nearly six months of rigorous training and competition, they stood out in the preliminary rounds and advanced to the three-day finals held in Chongqing.

The semifinals centered around simulated business scenarios, testing the students’ tax expertise, case analysis, teamwork, and presentation skills, presenting a significant challenge to their professional and comprehensive abilities. Particularly, the representatives from Chung Yuan Christian University had to familiarize themselves with Chinese tax laws and regulations, which added to the difficulty. Nevertheless, they demonstrated their solid tax knowledge, excellent analytical skills, and composed presentation abilities, earning the Excellence Award and proving once again the strong professional capabilities of the students from Chung Yuan Christian University.

The participating students expressed immense gratitude for the support and encouragement from the professors at the Department of Accounting throughout the competition. They attributed their success to the up-to-date and practical accounting and tax knowledge taught in their courses. The department offers a diverse range of courses, including those combining accounting, auditing with AI and big data, and those aligned with sustainable development trends. In addition to traditional tax and law programs, management and finance programs, and government and non-profit programs, new programs such as “Business Intelligence” and “Sustainable Governance” have been introduced. Moreover, the department has established an “International Accounting Firm Employment Program” in collaboration with the Big Four firms, providing practical case analysis training led by practicing accountants. These diverse learning opportunities equip students with the essential skills to analyze international tax cases during competitions. The programs also integrate internships and employment opportunities, with internship agreements in place with global Big Four accounting firms and renowned small and medium-sized accounting firms, allowing students to gain practical experience during summer breaks or their entire fourth year, ensuring a seamless transition to employment after graduation.

Additionally, the four students expressed their gratitude towards the alumni of the Department of Accounting at Chung Yuan Christian University, who have excelled in the industry and continuously give back to their alma mater. The alumni have established various scholarships, with annual awards amounting to over one million New Taiwan Dollars. They also provide support for academic competitions, offering significant encouragement and support to the students.

The Department of Accounting at Chung Yuan Christian University annually nurtures over 100 accounting professionals, with more than half securing positions at the Big Four international accounting firms in Taiwan after graduation. Impressively, nearly 90% of the students have confirmed their post-graduation employment by the first semester of their senior year, a testament to the high regard employers have for Chung Yuan’s educational quality.

To further enhance students’ practical skills and increase their global mobility and employability, Chung Yuan Christian University’s School of Business passed the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation in 2015. In 2023, it also became a member of the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) Global Network, placing it among the top 5% of business schools worldwide. Notably, Chung Yuan’s School of Business is the only private university in Taiwan to have achieved both prestigious accreditations.
