In response to the needs of the new era and to provide students with a higher quality learning environment, the B1 “Study Room and Reading Room” of the Chang Ching Yu Memorial Library underwent a comprehensive renovation and was reopened on October 23, 2024. This renovation not only enhanced the comfort and brightness of the study space but also added more seating and power outlets to meet student needs. It fully demonstrates the university’s commitment to prioritizing student needs, making this space an ideal place for Chung Yuan students to engage in self-directed learning.
The overall renovation project cost approximately NT$4.81 million, with NT$1.7 million raised so far. To honor the donors for their contributions to campus development, certificates of appreciation were presented at the reopening ceremony. The primary donor, alumnus Jimmy Lin (Department of Interior Design), traveled from the United States to attend the event. Lin, the President of BPI Lighting Design Inc. in the U.S., was motivated to donate NT$500,000 for the renovation of the study room, expressing gratitude for the care he received from Chung Yuan faculty after graduation and being inspired by his classmate, alumnus Jacky Chang. Other donors included alumnus Warren Wang, General Manager of Liang Rong Construction (MBA program), alumnus Jacky Chang, Director of Taijie Interior Design (Department of Interior Design), as well as Chairman Chang Kuang-Cheng, former Director and Chair Professor Chen Chao-Chen, among others.
The renovation design was led by architect Hui-Yu Kuan, an alumnus of the Department of Architecture, who emphasized upgrading the space to meet modern learning needs while retaining the original design intent. The existing tables and chairs were restored and adjusted, with the large 12-person tables reconfigured into setups more suitable for individual reading and group discussions to accommodate diverse learning habits. The original tabletops were refinished, and the chairs were repainted, preserving the essence of the original design. The architect transformed the uniform spatial arrangement by modifying table configurations and skillfully using lighting and color, creating a functional and comfortable learning space that meets contemporary needs while staying current with evolving trends.
The renovated B1 Study Room and Reading Room now offers a total of 489 seats, including 18 computer stations, with power outlets provided at each seat to facilitate students’ use of electronic devices. This upgrade symbolizes a comprehensive digital and modern transformation of the Chang Ching Yu Memorial Library, aiming to present a contemporary aesthetic while becoming an ideal space for Chung Yuan students to read, discuss, and engage in self-directed learning.
