To promote ethnic integration and embody the core values of holistic education, the Indigenous Student Resource Center of the Office of Student Affairs at Chung Yuan Christian University held the 2023 “Indigenous Culture Week” opening event on November 13 at the plaza in front of the campus activity center. Co-organized by the Indigenous Youth Club and the Indigenous Special Program of the College of Design, the event attracted nearly 200 faculty and students, creating a lively atmosphere. The three-day event featured a variety of activities, showcasing CYCU’s commitment to cultural diversity and ethnic identity.
The opening ceremony on November 13 was themed “Traditional Attire Day,” symbolizing the heritage and pride of different ethnic groups and cultures. Indigenous students at Chung Yuan Christian University donned their traditional attire, showcasing their cultural pride. The event commenced with a performance by members of the Indigenous Youth Club, who sang and danced to modern music, creating an atmosphere full of youthful energy and vibrancy. This provided faculty and students with an engaging visual and auditory experience.
Director of the Indigenous Student Resource Center at the Office of Student Affairs, Zhang Yun-Hui, stated: “The opening event of Indigenous Culture Week aims for indigenous students to wear traditional attire, symbolizing cultural heritage. It is hoped that through this, faculty and students from different backgrounds can gain a deeper understanding and respect for indigenous cultures.” She emphasized that the food market and traditional crafts demonstrations in the culture week series are more than just commercial activities—they are cultural education. By experiencing traditional crafts and food preparation firsthand, these activities foster ethnic integration within the campus.
The annual Indigenous Culture Week is not only a platform for indigenous students to showcase themselves and promote their culture but also an opportunity to ignite the cultural torch, allowing faculty and students to experience the unique charm and profound essence of indigenous culture. Dean of Student Affairs, Jin Ting-Yo, expressed the hope that this positive energy would spread to more students, enabling them to learn tolerance and understanding through the interaction of diverse cultures.
