CYCU Hosts National Ethics Case Competition, Highlighting AI and Sustainability Commitment.

To strengthen university students’ ethical awareness and interdisciplinary skills, Chung Yuan Christian University held the 2025 National Professional Ethics Case Competition Finals and Award Ceremony on June 13, 2025. The event drew 150 teams from 17 universities across Taiwan. Focusing on ethical issues related to AI and sustainable development, the competition saw 13 finalist teams present innovative solutions and insights after a rigorous preliminary review.

Since the 2015 academic year, Chung Yuan Christian University has made “Professional Ethics” a core required general education course at the college level. By integrating theoretical learning with practical case competitions, the university encourages students to engage with real-world issues, develop ethical judgment, and deepen their understanding of the relationship between technological advancement and social responsibility. Over the past decade, competition themes have covered AI, healthcare, privacy, education, civic engagement, climate action, and corporate ethics, forming a signature teaching practice at CYCU and fostering idea exchange among universities.

This year’s final entries explored diverse topics, including the use of generative AI in judicial decisions, AI tools for improving social connection among elderly living alone, legal responsibility in AI medical diagnostics, student rights versus AI surveillance, the societal impact of deepfakes, and the transformation of global corporate sustainability strategies. Teams were praised for their structured analysis, stakeholder identification, and well-reasoned, practical proposals.

After on-site presentations and Q&A evaluations, two teams were awarded the Gold Prize: Chung Yuan Christian University’s project on “Balancing Consumer Expectations and Environmental Responsibility” and National Quemoy University’s “AI in Warfare Is No Longer Just Talk.” Several CYCU teams also received Silver and Bronze Prizes, reflecting the university’s long-standing commitment to ethics education and interdisciplinary learning. The judging panel, composed of experts from the humanities, law, engineering, business, and design, evaluated entries based on topic relevance, analytical depth, and communication skills, with a strong emphasis on logical thinking and teamwork.

CYCU emphasized the importance of nurturing a new generation equipped with both moral sensitivity and professional judgment in response to rapid technological advancement and emerging ethical challenges. Through the National Professional Ethics Case Competition, the university provides a platform for students to voice their perspectives and explore diverse approaches to ethical practice grounded in real-world issues. This initiative embodies CYCU’s commitment to holistic education, aiming to inspire thoughtful and responsible contributions to society.
