To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), the Service-Learning Center of the Office of Student Affairs held the “CYCU 70: Sailing Together — Service-Learning for Sustainability” showcase on October 19, 2025, at the Tsung Cho-Chang Memorial Hall.
In collaboration with local nonprofit organizations, the event echoed the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and featured interactive activities and project presentations highlighting CYCU students’ creativity and commitment to sustainable social action.
The morning “Harbor Market” gathered Taoyuan-based NPOs and community groups to promote civic dialogue through experiential booths, while the afternoon Achievement Presentation showcased student projects integrating innovation with social care. Highlights included a solar-powered, low-cost wheelchair developed by students under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Chien-Sheng Huang, winner of a gold medal at the Taiwan Innotech Expo, and a keynote by Ms. Hsu Chien-Wen from Cambodia’s Phare Social Enterprise, who shared how arts education can empower and transform youth communities.

At the achievement presentation, CYCU’s service-learning teams showcased projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- The Cambodia Team launched the Village Children English Learning Project, training local high school students as English teachers to improve educational access.
- The Thailand Team, in partnership with Chungli Vocational High School of Commerce, held Mandarin Summer Camps at local schools to promote cultural and language exchange.
- The Service-Learning Seed Team organized an Environmental Summer Camp for Second-Generation Youth, enhancing environmental literacy and cultural identity among new immigrant children.
- The Editorial Team published “The Trilogy of Green Action”, sharing stories of land, children, and youth to spread sustainability awareness.

Taoyuan City Youth Affairs Bureau Director Chia-Ling Hou emphasized that youth are a vital force for social progress, commending CYCU for its long-standing dedication to service learning that has brought positive change to the local community.
CYCU Dean of Student Affairs Ting-Yu Chin noted that the university upholds the core values of holistic education and care for life. Since the establishment of the Service-Learning Center in 2007, CYCU has cultivated over 10,000 student volunteers who have participated in both domestic and international service programs. He expressed hope that more young people will carry forward the “Benefit the World” spirit and practice their responsibility as global citizens.

Director Che-I Tu of CYCU’s Service-Learning Center stated that students learn through real-world engagement, strengthening social responsibility and practical problem-solving skills. She announced that four student teams will organize a “Benefit the World Promotion Week” in November, featuring river-cleaning and education fund-raising activities to encourage continued community participation.
The Center upholds the spirit of “learning through service and serving through learning,” fostering student empathy and action. It will continue connecting industry, government, and academia to advance sustainability and the UN SDGs, ensuring that the “Service-Learning for Sustainability” initiative keeps sailing toward a broader “Benefit the World” vision.
