To enhance international research collaboration and student exchange, the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) visited Tokyo Denki University (TDU) from November 1 to 5, 2025. Led by Prof. Yu-Kun Lai, Chair of the department, a delegation of nine faculty members participated in the “CYCU–TDU Joint Research Forum and Collaboration Workshop on Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering.” The visit deepened nearly two decades of partnership between the two universities, marking a new chapter in cross-border academic cooperation.

Since the signing of an academic cooperation memorandum in 2006, Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) and Tokyo Denki University (TDU) have maintained close exchanges in the fields of electrical, electronic, and information engineering. The forum marks a renewed strengthening of this long-standing partnership and highlights the CYCU Department of Electrical Engineering’s commitment to expanding its global academic network and promoting interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students.

The visit coincided with Tokyo Denki University’s annual Gakuensai (University Festival), during which CYCU faculty and students were invited to join the campus celebration. On November 1 and 2, the open-campus event drew large crowds of visitors of all ages, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Renowned for its emphasis on technological innovation and hands-on learning, TDU’s Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering opened several laboratories to the public, showcasing various bionic robots and intelligent devices. The experience offered CYCU participants valuable insight into the creativity and vitality that define Japan’s approach to technology education.

During the research forum and collaboration workshop, both universities engaged in active and insightful academic exchanges. Prof. Yu-Kun Lai, Chair of CYCU’s Department of Electrical Engineering, began by introducing the department’s recent developments, followed by a series of research presentations from CYCU faculty members. The topics covered a wide range of fields—including biomedical engineering, active noise control, electric vehicles, wireless radio frequency, network communication, embedded systems, and digital control—demonstrating the department’s strong capabilities and interdisciplinary research excellence.

The forum was co-hosted by Prof. Akio Nakamura, Chair of TDU’s Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, and Prof. Makoto Shishido, Director of International Affairs. Both sides exchanged commemorative gifts, symbolizing their long-term partnership. After the forum, CYCU delegates toured 12 TDU research laboratories—covering control systems, electric vehicles, wireless networks, acoustics, and medical electronics—and observed innovative projects such as bionic and flying robots, gaining valuable insights into TDU’s advanced research.

During the concluding discussion session, professors from both universities engaged in in-depth exchanges on future research collaboration, student exchange, and upcoming workshop plans. The CYCU Department of Electrical Engineering plans to send ten outstanding students to Tokyo Denki University in 2026 for a one-week laboratory internship, with logistical and accommodation support provided by TDU’s Office of International Affairs—further strengthening the partnership between the two institutions.

CYCU emphasized that the university has long been committed to promoting holistic education and international research collaboration. The Department of Electrical Engineering’s visit to Japan not only broadened students’ global perspectives but also strengthened transnational academic connections. Moving forward, CYCU will continue to advance its vision of “Bringing CYCU to the world and the world to CYCU” through international forums, joint research projects, and student exchange programs—laying a solid foundation for cultivating globally competitive talent in science and technology.
