CYCU Hosts the 24th Annual Conference on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.

From December 12 to 14, 2025, CYCU hosted the 24th Annual Conference on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and International Academic Symposium, a key academic event of its 70th anniversary. Co-organized with the Association of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Taiwan, the conference focused on “Sustainable Development of Global Chinese Education,” highlighting CYCU’s commitment to Chinese language education and international academic collaboration.

The conference focused on the sustainable development of global Chinese language education, exploring three key themes: the role of Chinese in multilingual contexts, teaching and learning in diverse cultures, and instructional innovation in the multimedia era. The program addressed language policy, international trends, pedagogy and materials, intercultural communication, and digital applications in language teaching, strengthening Taiwan’s professional capacity and international engagement in global Chinese education.

The conference featured distinguished scholars from Taiwan and abroad as keynote speakers. Professor Emeritus Chuan-Jen Ko of the University of Iowa presented research on Heritage Language Learning; Professor Emeritus Boping Yuan of the University of Cambridge analyzed the application of second language input theory in Chinese language teaching; and Professor Tsung-Han Tsai of National Central University shared trends in AI applications in Chinese language education.

Additional insights were provided by Distinguished Professor Shou-Hsin Teng of Chung Yuan Christian University and Professor Yong-Jin Park of Jeonbuk National University, offering diverse perspectives on emerging research, pedagogical practices, and the challenges of sustainable development in global Chinese education.

In addition to the keynote speeches, the conference featured 121 academic paper presentations by scholars from universities and Chinese language teaching institutions in Taiwan and abroad. Topics covered curriculum design, teacher training, language assessment, and intercultural education. According to Professor Yu-Fen Liu, Chair of the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, the event was supported by the National Science and Technology Council, the Ministry of Education, and the Overseas Community Affairs Council, and attracted a wide range of scholars and educators, jointly advancing Chinese language education toward diversity, sustainability, and intelligent innovation.

Dean Pen-Nis Peng of the College of Humanities and Education at Chung Yuan Christian University noted that the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language has achieved significant results in teaching innovation and talent cultivation. The department has established smart classrooms and the Meta-Display immersive learning environment, integrating AI and digital technologies to enhance students’ Chinese language teaching and media editing skills. It also offers interdisciplinary programs in seven foreign languages, business Chinese, and digital editing, while actively promoting overseas internships in more than 20 countries, enabling students to gain hands-on teaching and international experience and strengthen their career readiness.

In addition, the department has established a comprehensive pathway with the Chinese Language Teaching Center that integrates internships, professional training, and employment, strengthening students’ multilingual abilities and professional competencies. Through a diverse and well-structured curriculum and learning environment, Chung Yuan Christian University continues to cultivate professionals with global perspectives, innovative capabilities, and a commitment to sustainability for Chinese language education in Taiwan and worldwide.
