Discovering Taoyuan Through CYCU’s “Taoyuan Studies” Exhibition.

The “Taoyuan at CYCU: Everyday Stories of a Growing City” exhibition, held by the General Education Center at Chung Yuan Christian University, opened on June 4 at the Chang Ching-Yu Memorial Library and runs through June 13. Featuring student works inspired by local observation, the exhibition offers diverse perspectives on Taoyuan—from policy and land issues to nature, culture, and social inclusion.

Part of CYCU’s long-running “Taoyuan Studies” program, this year’s theme, Everyday Stories, encourages students to start with daily life, reflect on local identity, and express their insights through creative works. As Director Hui-Ling Ko notes, “What arises from the everyday becomes timeless.”

One of the featured works, “A Home That Can’t Be Moved,” was inspired by the emotional struggles of residents facing forced relocation under the Taoyuan Aerotropolis project. The student created a model moving truck and invited visitors to place small objects inside, symbolizing memories and emotions that can’t be packed away.
Creator Hsin-Yu Ho shared, “When we’re willing to speak up and let others see, change becomes possible.”

Another popular piece, “Taoyuan Train Monopoly,” invites visitors to take part in an interactive board game. The student turned seven train stations in Taoyuan into game spaces, where participants roll dice, complete tasks, and learn about the city’s railway history, industrial transformation, and urban development.
Blending education with play, the game offers an engaging way for visitors to explore Taoyuan’s rail culture and its role in shaping the city.

“Love Never Ends” features a floral and botanical landscape design symbolizing the coexistence and inclusiveness of Taoyuan’s diverse communities. The work reflects the city’s rich agricultural heritage and natural resources, inviting visitors into a multilingual, multicultural space that captures both the warmth and strength of Taoyuan.

“Taoyuan at CYCU: Everyday Stories of a Growing City” is more than just a course exhibition. It is a student-led conversation with the city. Through observation, reflection, and creative expression, students documented and engaged with Taoyuan in their own ways. Their work gives voice to the city’s many stories and invites others to see and feel Taoyuan from new perspectives.
