CYCU Expands Japan and Korea Partnerships to Strengthen Students’ Global Mobility.

Chung Yuan Christian University’s College of Humanities and Education is expanding international learning opportunities through partnerships with leading universities in South Korea and internship resources in Japan. By combining overseas academic collaboration with workplace training opportunities, CYCU aims to provide students with a cross-border learning environment aligned with global trends.

In addition to signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jeonbuk National University in South Korea, CYCU has also introduced internship-matching resources in Japan to help students connect with international workplaces and develop global career pathways.

To strengthen academic collaboration with higher education institutions in South Korea, Dean Penney Hsiao of CYCU’s College of Humanities and Education recently led faculty and students from the Department of Applied Chinese Language and Literature on an academic exchange visit to Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Jeonbuk National University. During the visit, CYCU signed an MOU with Jeonbuk National University, laying the foundation for future student exchanges, joint seminars, teaching collaboration, and interdisciplinary research. Faculty and students also participated in academic lectures and observed Chinese language classes in Korea, gaining insight into different approaches to language education and learning cultures through classroom activities, group discussions, and writing exchanges.

Wang Tzu-Yu, a senior student from the Department of Applied Chinese Language and Literature, shared that the opportunity to interact with graduate students at Seoul National University was a valuable experience. Through direct interaction and discussion, the student gained deeper insight into differences in language use among learners from diverse backgrounds and developed a greater appreciation for the importance of cross-cultural communication, making the learning experience more meaningful and enriching.

In addition, CYCU is actively expanding overseas internship opportunities for students. The College of Humanities and Education has introduced internship-matching resources from Japan and organized information sessions with participating companies to help students and faculty better understand Japan’s workplace culture, application processes, and potential career pathways.

Company representatives noted that Japan has been facing labor shortages in recent years, creating strong demand for Taiwanese students with foreign language proficiency, cross-cultural understanding, and communication skills. Students who perform well during their internships may also have opportunities to pursue future employment in Japan, including pathways related to specialized skill visas and long-term career development.

Dean Penney Hsiao emphasized that overseas learning should go beyond short-term experiences and become an important journey for students to integrate language expertise, cultural understanding, and career development skills. Moving forward, the College will continue integrating resources from international partner universities, overseas institutions, corporate internship programs, and government initiatives to establish a comprehensive training model that connects coursework, pre-departure preparation, overseas internships, and career development.

CYCU noted that in the era of AI and rapidly changing global workplaces, students increasingly need cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary learning experiences. By strengthening partnerships in Japan and South Korea, the College of Humanities and Education combines the expertise of the Departments of Applied Chinese Language and Literature and Applied Foreign Languages and Literatures to help students transform their interests in language and popular culture into opportunities for international learning and future career development.
